Achieving Gender Equality On TV: Are We On The Right Track?

Humanity has evolved by leaps and bounds in the last few millennia and will continue to do so in perpetuity. A lot of people feel our norms haven't evolved to match current realities as fast as it should, and that is true to some extent. But we've come a long way from the days a doctor was trying to publish a journal warning women of how they risked "disabling" their uterus if they tried to absorb as much information as their male peers. With the invention of digital media came a supremely powerful tool that, in theory, could be an unparalleled force for good and a medium of shaping minds on a global scale and at an expedited rate. That hasn't always been the case. But we're in the 21st century now, and the calls are louder for people in charge of putting these stories on our screens to represent as much as possible the diverse aspects of today's society and draw attention to biases which have been a part of that society for way too long. In response, we've had female characters shown to be as capable as their male counterparts, as they should be, with more complexity than writers of old afforded them. Related: Kyra Sedgwick on Ten Days in the Valley, Women in Film & the Human Connection It has been a struggle and like pretty much every struggle in history; it has been a two-steps-forward-one-step-backward tango, what with the increased visibility given to LGBTQ characters and subsequently turning a lot of those characters into fictional roadkill. View Slideshow: 14 Females Who Are Absolutely Fearless On the issue of sexism and the concerted effort to eliminate traces of it on our screens, have we been so focused on a narrow set of gender issues that we unknowingly ignore other problems and continue to perpetuate behaviors and norms that are offshoots of the very thing we seek to eradicate? As it is, the depiction of violence and how it is perceived based on gender seems to be a little bit too one-sided. There was much uproar in 2016 regarding a promotional poster depicting the X-men's Mystique getting choked by Apocalypse (in a non-sexual way of course). The reaction was appropriate because of the disproportionately high rate of male on female violence and that the message the image may unintentionally spread. However, looking at what we have on TV today, writers and directors unquestionably have no issue showing men or women getting hit by other women. In some instances, it is even made to look cute or passionate -- a hurt girlfriend lashing out or a mother scolding a child. It is commonplace and doesn't do any good for anyone. Any form of casual violence is never okay and should be stamped out unless depicted in the proper context. We also have the almost routine utterance of "innocent women and children" as casualties of war meant to draw out an audience's compassion. Not to take away from the horrors of war and loss they are trying to convey, but statements like tha..

25 TV Couples That Never Should Have Happened

Couples don't always work out, especially on television shows, and yet there are some cases to be made for relationships that should have never been explored. Some of the reasons become time-wasting in the form of a predictable obstacle, or when they just aren't right for each other yet the audience is meant to follow along on their short-lived journey. Related: Enjoy UNLIMITED access to thousands of Movies and TV shows with Amazon Prime Video. There is also the question of how much a couple works when there are so many expectations from the fandom side of things. There are sometimes mistakes on TV when two people get together when it would have made more sense if that wasn't the focus. Here is a slideshow of just a few that jump out as blunders, either current or past. 1. Mon-El and Kara - Supergirl There is no way to avoid the obvious issue of Mon-El appearing on Supergirl and the way the narrative shifted focus. The issue with Mon-El and Kara was the way that Kara got lost in her own story, so them breaking up might be what the show needs for their lead. 2. Bellamy and Echo - The 100 How much time do you have for this one? Bellamy Blake's romantic life has been on the back burner pretty much always, so it is adding insult to injury to say this is the relationship that the male lead is worthy of being introduced in. Besides the obvious way that offscreen development means offscreen investment for the fans, it is a silly way to attempt to integrate Echo into the narrative as a newfound hero and not the enemy that we have known for so long. But Echo was the villain, specifically to Bellamy for three seasons straight when she killed, almost killed, or attempted to harm everyone he cared about. It is unfair to expect Bellamy's offscreen forgiveness and popularity to do the work for Echo's redemption when it could have been done by just writing more content for Echo, because at the end of the day Season 5 didn't give her much anyway. And it wouldn't have disrespected Bellamy's character and the audience that blindly had to hear the time jump excuse as a way to sell something that frankly is doomed regardless. 3. Nancy and Jonathan - Stranger Things Shelving away the fact that Jonathan took photos of Nancy that she didn't consent to, these two won't be able to last long. Maybe it is the way that the story brought them together, connecting over the search for the truth, but soon reality might fracture this idealized view of their relationship. 4. Alex and Sutton - The Bold Type This is a strange one because Sutton and Alex themselves could have worked if only the show actually went all in with them. Their relationship and by extension Alex was treated as a way to stir something within Richard and his relationship with Sutton. Alex and his genuine feelings for Sutton were played with for a while and then shoved aside when he wasn't needed anymore and that was such a huge shame. 5...

Arrow Season Premiere Photos Reveal a New Look for Felicity

Arrow Season 7 might as well be subtitled "the season of change." Oliver (Stephen Amell) is well and truly incarcerated, and his friends and allies are on the outside attempting to move on following all of the action that brought them to their knees on Arrow Season 6. However, Oliver's wife Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) is embracing a whole new look, as teased by the official stills from Arrow Season 7 Episode 1. Oh yes, that is the tech genius with pink-tinged hair, and we are totally digging it. If you watch Arrow online, you know that Felicity has generally had blonde hair since the series debuted. That's not to say we haven't witnessed her change her locks before. Related: Arrow: Colton Haynes Returns as Series Regular She did have black hair with some purple thrown in during her days as a young hacker, so there's that. Felicity visits Oliver in Slabside Maximum Security Prison, and we think it's fair to say that she's worried sick about something. Could it be that Oliver's on the inside with people he got sent there, or could there be a new villain wreaking havoc in the city? We have no idea, but there's sure to be some growing pains for husband and wife as they navigate this dark chapter that finds them well and truly apart. Related: The CW Fall Premiere Dates: Charmed, Riverdale & More! Felicity's life will have changed for the worse because the public now know her as the wife of the elusive vigilante known as Green Arrow. That could explain the change in appearance, we guess. Still, it will be fun to watch how Oliver reacts to this big change for her. With that said, it looks like all of the returning series regulars will have to speak to Oliver through the glass as he serves time for his crimes. The official stills released also tease a moment between Diggle (David Ramsey) and Oliver, but aside from that, there's no telling what they're talking about. It's unclear at this stage just how long Oliver will be spending behind bars, but it would benefit the story more to keep him there for more than a handful of episodes. All of the information that's been teased leans on the prison storyline, so it might be used as a plot device to switch up the storytelling mechanics of the series. A show approaching its seventh season needs to change things to remain fresh, so we're all for it. As previously reported, Arrow is on the move. The veteran series is moving from Thursdays to Mondays. What are your thoughts on Felicity's new look and the focus on the prison storyline? Hit the comments below.
