Orange is the New Black Spinoff: in the Works!

It was just weeks ago that Netflix officially confirmed that the upcoming seventh season of Orange is the New Black would be the show's last.

A sequel to the hit drama series is already in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"We’re already in discussions and, when the timing is right, we’ll talk further with [creator] Jenji [Kohan] about a potential sequel," Lionsgate TV Group chairman Kevin Beggs said during an earnings call.

The website notes that nothing is confirmed as of yet and that it will all come down to timing, but given that discussions are already underway, it seems like a sequel series is a strong possibility.

Despite cast members noting that the end could be near for the hit series, many thought the show would go on for an eighth season, but the show's demise was confirmed last month.

“After seven seasons, it’s time to be released from prison,” said series creator Jenji Cohan in a statement.

"I will miss all the badass ladies of Litchfield and the incredible crew we’ve worked with. My heart is orange but fade to black.”

Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content Netflix, said, “During production of Season 1, everyone involved with Orange Is The New Black felt like we knew a special secret we couldn’t wait to share with the world."

"Since then, we have laughed, cried, raged, and roared with the women of Litchfield, and every moment spent with them felt like borrowed time — too good to last forever/ We will be sad to say goodbye but we will definitely be going out on a high.”

The wording of both statements has a certain finality to them, which could suggest the story of Litchfield will wrap, but we could pick up in another prison on a new series.

That prison could have a handful of the cast members from the current series, but time will tell, we guess.

Orange is the New Black has been a roaring success for Netflix since it debuted back in 2013. It had groundbreaking stories, breakout performances, and most of all, solid writing.

It was Netflix's most-watched series at one point, so that should be taken into consideration here.

There's no word on whether the new series would air on Netflix or if it could move over to a competing streaming service or make the jump to a TV station.

What are your thoughts on this? Is it too soon to be talking about a new series?
